Tart Apple, Strawberry and Basil Hidden Greens Smoothie


  • 2 apples
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 12 to 15 strawberries (approx. 1 1/2” in diameter)
  • 8 to 10 basil leaves
  • 2 tbsp golden flax seed
  • 2 cups roughly chopped hearts of romaine leaves
  • Zest of one lime (approx. 1 tsp)

Delicious Pink Lady apples combine with vibrant, red strawberries, fresh basil, romaine leaves, lime zest, and some flax seed for a smoothie welcomed any time of the day…offering a delicious way to start the morning or even a great treat for kids getting home from school. The apple-berry combo is highlighted by a light hint of sweet basil and brightened with the addition of lime zest. The flax seed is a great supplemental nutritious add that doesn’t fight for the flavor limelight; happy to remain in the background along with the romaine.

Each 12-ounce serving of this smoothie delivers approximately 52.2% of the recommended daily value of Vitamin A and approximately 71.2% of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C (based on a 2,000 calorie diet). And, the final product looks more like a fruit-slush treat than a good-for-you concoction.

Add apple, then ice, water, strawberries, basil, flax, romaine, and lime zest to pitcher of high-speed electric blender (one suitable for crushing ice and handling firm textures). Blend on high (or use “smoothie” option, if applicable) for approximately 1 minute. (If necessary, stop machine intermittently to scrape down sides or press ingredients down to remove any air pockets that might impede blending.) Pour into glasses and serve immediately.
